Kansas City premiere! Set amid New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia’s crackdown on burlesque before the 1939 World’s Fair. A headliner called "the nance"—usually played by a straight man—was a stereotypically camp homosexual and master of comic double entendre. THE NANCE recreates the naughty, raucous world of burlesque's heyday and tells the backstage story of Chauncey Miles and his fellow performers. At a time when it was easy to play gay and dangerous to be gay, Chauncey's uproarious antics on the stage stand out in marked contrast to his offstage life.

The Spinning Tree Sings! cabaret fundraiser series continues with international jazz artist Angela Hagenbach. Angela is joined by Roger Wilder, piano, Tyrone Clark, bass, and Michael Warren, drums, in an evening hosted by co-founders Michael and Andrew Grayman-Parkhurst. With a special partial announcement of the 2019-20 Spinning Tree season!
Angela Hagenbach: Johnny Mandel said it best: “Angela Hagenbach sings with perfect taste and sounds like no one else!” Her lush contralto covers nearly three octaves. She placed first runner up in the Sarah Vaughan International Vocal Competition while authoring the celebrated 2015 jazz production JazzAlice: An Adventure in Wonderland based on the Lewis Carroll classic. Angela has produced and released multiple recordings to critical national acclaim including recording and touring with Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster. Two of her compositions are featured in ‘Last Will’, a feature length film starring Tatum O’Neal, James Brolin and Peter Coyote. Hagenbach completed two World Tours as Cultural Jazz Ambassador for the United States and she is listed as one of the great jazz singers in The Great Jazz Singers - The Ultimate Guide by jazz historian Scott Yanow.
